  Baptism of Christ
Nourishment for Generations

This painting depicts the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the center, surrounded by six vignettes depicting stories that relate to the theme of baptism and track the revelation of rebirth through biblical themes, reminding us of the meaning and importance of baptism, the eucharist, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Clockwise from upper right: The creation of the world, Jesus as the bread of life, Baptism of the Holy Spirit Moses striking water from the rock, Jesus as the life-giving water. The vignettes are accompanied by corresponding Bible references.

The Baptism of Christ is a revelation of the whole Blessed Trinity. The Father, the voice from on high, reveals that Jesus is His only begotten Son, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descends on Christ, the Lordís Annointed.

The baptism of Saint John the Baptist was with water. The baptism of Christ is quite different. This baptism frees man from original sin and forgives his sins, saves him from slavery to evil, and is a sign of his rebirth in the Holy Spirit. It imparts to him a new life, which is participation in the triune life of God.
