Pentecost refers to the moment when the Holy Spirit entered the apostles as they were gathered in hiding after Jesus ascension into heaven. They heard the roar of great wind and tongues of flame descended upon them. They were immediately filled with courage and vigorously when forth to preach the gospel. This painting features St. Peter delivering his first sermon, when all the listeners heared him in their own languages, with smaller vignettes of St. Stephen, the first martyr, and the Holy Spirit descending upon St. Peter.

Saint Peter preaching. Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. The Holy Spirit came to remain with the church forever. He dwells in the church permanently and unfailingly, performing in it without ceasing. Obedience to the church is fundamental. With love Saint Peter taught, will we?

Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came to fill the Apostles with truth and to prepare them to bear witness to Jesus and to fill their hearts with love. They spoke in tongues, a miracle enabling them to carry the gospel to all nations, thus, “Come Holy Spirit” is written in Chinese characters. The Holy Spirit is the Person of Love in the life of God, like a breath of pure love.

Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr (Acts 7:59). As he was being stoned, being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into Heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He cried out in love, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
